Why buy snow fort-building kits?
Many snow novices may ask, “Why build a snow fort? Isn’t it just as much fun to have a snowball fight without one?” The answer is a huge – no.
If you’ve ever spent hours outside in the cold rolling up snowballs and flinging them at your friends, you would know that unless you want to cut the fun short, you want to find cover. You can duck behind sheds, trees, fences, and anywhere you can find in your backyard. If you choose not to find shelter, you’ll quickly know that the more times a snowball hits you, the colder you become, and the heat from your body will melt it so that you will become a wet, freezing mess. You don’t want to be hit. You need to stay as dry as possible and enjoy the fight.

The art of making the perfect snow fort
There is definitely a knack for making the perfect snow fort. Think of yourself as a bricklayer – it’s a skilled art.
The easiest way to start is to find the flattest part of the yard. If you’re planning on dual fights, you may want to place them facing each other but far enough apart to aim and shoot your snowballs. Next, decide how many people will be inside your fort. Is it just for you, or will you be working in teams? Take a stick or snow shovel and draw out the size and shape of your fort.
Once you’ve decided on the size, you can begin making snow bricks, and the mold is important for durability. If you don’t want to buy a kit, you can use something like rectangular tupperware that you might find lying around in the kitchen. Use it the same way you would as the kit – fill it will snow and place the top on it to compress it into a brick. Lay the bricks along the perimeter line, leaving about an inch or two between them. Once you’ve finished the perimeter, you can begin to add layers.
When adding the layers, make sure you stagger the snow bricks for a stronger fort. Continue until you’ve reached the desired height. Next, fill in spaces between snow bricks with snow, and lastly, sprinkle some cold water on the bricks to cement them in. Once the water freezes, your fort should last until the weather melts it. If you live in a climate that stays below-freezing temperatures for months at a time, you’ve just built a winter haven full of hours of fun!
Making a snow fort step by step:
- Find a flat surface. if making dual forts, don’t place them too close or far apart
- outline the size with a stick or snow shovel
- use your brick mold to begin making bricks
- place bricks along the perimeter 1 to 2 inches apart
- Continue making the second level by staggering the snow bricks
- fill in the spaces between bricks with snow
- finish by sprinkling cold water on bricks to cement them
What is the best kind of snow for snow fort building kits?
There is definitely good and not-so-good snow to make your snow fort. You want snow that’s damp enough that when you pick it up and ball it in your hand, it sticks together. If you get a snowfall like this, you’ll have a great time building your fort, and it will last!
If the snow is too wet, it will stick together but be difficult to mold. While puffy snow falls beautifully and feels amazing to drop into and make angels, it’s difficult to make a good fort or even snowman with it. You can add a little moisture by using a spray bottle filled with cold water. Spray the snow you want to mold until it sticks together. Once it’s at the desired dampness, you can build away. We don’t recommend pouring cups of water on the puffy snow – you’ll end up with lumps of ice instead of uniform dampness.
Be a Picasso
Once you’ve completed your fort, why not put your stamp of ownership on it? Use your creativity and become a Picasso – decorate it! Depending upon what your snowball fight is for – football teams, countries, dare I say politics, or even Cheetos vs. Doritos. Use flags or memorabilia. You can even use food coloring in a spray bottle to paint your own graffiti. Make it look like a giant snowcone – just don’t eat it. Whatever you do, have fun with it.
Don’t forget the snowballs!
Once you have the perfect fort, you need snowballs. With these snowball makers, you gain a huge advantage to your opponent as you will be able to make a snowball in less than a second. Just scoop and close to make the perfect balls
